Aloe vera is not a cactus, but a succulent, and it is nicknamed the "plant of immortality" because it can live for over 100 years and was used by ancient Egyptians 6,000 years ago.

The thick aloe leaf is like a built‑in water bottle: it stores so much moisture in its gel that the plant can survive long dry periods in the desert regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula where it evolved.

Aloe vera is a member of the Asphodelaceae family, making it more closely related to lilies and onions than to cacti.

There are over 500 known species in the Aloe genus, but only a few—like Aloe vera barbadensis—are widely used for skincare and medicine.

An aloe vera leaf is about 99% water by weight, which is why the gel feels so cool and hydrating when you put it on your skin.

If you cut an aloe leaf, the plant can "seal" the wound with protective compounds, helping it conserve moisture and resist infection.
